The American University in Cairo

Arabic Language Institute

Placement Exam

This is the placement exam of the Arabic Language Institute of the American Universityin Cairo .  It is a proficiency-based exam aiming at identifying your level of proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic.   It ranges from the Novice High through Intermediate, Advanced, and Superior levels.

The exam is composed of three parts: reading comprehension, listening comprehension and writing.

Part One:  Reading Comprehension

This part is composed of 5 reading passages, each is followed by multiple choice questions which you should attempt to answer.  All texts used are authentic, taken from different sources, ranging from short advertisements to articles, and covering a wide range of topics.

Part Two: Listening Comprehension.

You will listen to three audio excerpts ranging from announcements to narratives and other types of passages of increasing difficulty covering different topics.  Each will be followed  by multiple choice questions.  While listening, you may take notes.  Once the excerpt is finished, begin answering the multiple choice questions. It is important to have reliable speakers or headphones.

Part Three:  Writing

This part tests your level in writing Modern Standard Arabic. The topics you will write range in difficulty and length. You have two questions that you should attempt to answer.  The first question is writing a letter. The second question asks you to choose one topic out of 6 to write an essay (minimum of 250 words).  You are to print out the question sheet and hand write the answers.  You will then fax or email the answer sheet with your name and id number.

You are encouraged to attempt answering as many questions as you can.  If you find difficulty in one question move on to the following one. In the end submit whatever you could answer.  You are  not expected to complete all questions, please avoid guessing.  This will help us  in placing you in your appropriate level.

You have two hours for the Reading and Listening parts. During this time, if you submit your answers, you will not be able to get back to the exam questions. After the two hours timing, the exam will be automatically terminated. You can sit for this exam twice using the same account, and the higher score will be used for your placement.

Before you start the exam, you must write your username and password which has been recently sent to you by Email from alicall@aucegypt.edu .
